When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be everything! Of course I never forget my first love… it was music and my first dream was to be a singer. I remember sitting on my bed in front of my mother’s radio that was playing country music. The lights were off and everyone was asleep because it was midnight. I was so in love with music and how it made me feel that I made a promise to myself to grow up and be a singer. I was 11 years old; it was an important moment that I didn’t want to forget which is why I made myself remember how old I was for future reference!

What have been some of the detours you’ve taken along the way?

Since then I’ve dreamed of becoming a professional ice skater, a cardiologist (because my dad had a heart condition) and a teacher (because I enjoy telling people what to do) to name a few. Like many kids, I had my imagination. In reality, I grew up to become a TV journalist, a manager and food business owner before exploring the world of makeup artistry. I’m all over the place because I have many interests. Every job that I got to do was a journey that helps me know myself better, finding out what I’m good at and what I like.

What’s one step on your creative journey that you’re really glad you took?

It took years of thinking and avoiding but when I finally did it, quitting my full time job was the most important step I’ve made in my creative journey. Working full time gave me financial stability but it was a train ride that wasn’t going to bring me to my desired destination. At the time, I had already started doing makeup on the side but the commitment of working 45 hours/week meant that I was restricted to what I could do with my desire to explore makeup artistry. My husband was very supportive. After resigning, I was able to focus on my makeup artistry business because I had the energy and was in the right space of mind. I also got a part-time job with an international beauty brand that helps me focused even more to constantly be in a space where I think and do makeup.

What did it take to discover your unique voice? Have you found it yet?

I have taken a lot of detours… I think at this point in my life, makeup artistry is my unique voice. It’s my form of creativity that makes me feel happy, productive and alive. Who knows what I’ll be doing in 5 years time! Someone once told me that to be successful you needed to pursue the things that you both love and are good at. For me these are many things, and upon exploring one thing it leads me to another.

What have you mastered? Are there tasks, skills, or opportunities you’ve had to develop, or that you are stilling developing, in your field?

I plan to keep developing my makeup skills as it is now my source of income. I find makeup very empowering and fascinating. The aspects of makeup artistry that I have yet to explore are endless. I don’t particularly like challenges in general, but when it comes to makeup I find myself embracing them more.

If you had all the time and money in the world, what would you do?

I’ll travel the world with my family.

What change would you like to see in the world?

I’d like for makeup products to be cheaper in Australia! It’s crazy how much more we have to pay over here.

In what you are doing, how are you changing your piece of the world through creativity?

My 14 year old sister Margareth is watching my every move. Hopefully I’m setting a good example for her that whatever it is that she loves to do, she can pursue it and is she’d focused and work hard she’ll be alright.

If you had one day left, how would you spend it?

With my family, at home.

Describe a typical day in your creative life?

Some days I wake up early to do wedding makeup, some days I’ll follow the bridal party around the whole day and some days I got up to a creative photo shoot/collaboration with other creatives. My favourite creative day is when I get to stay at home and experiment with makeup with no time pressure or somewhere to be. I’ll be challenged and often make mistakes but I could try again and learn from it.
