“Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.”
― Maya Angelou, Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now
My husband and I are in Fiji at the moment. After a pretty intense six month period of significant changes in our lives, we are taking a break.
We needed to withdraw from the everyday to rest and take time just to be. Sure, we’ve still been working. We’ve both been writing and taking photos, however, essentially we are resting.
Our work is our passion, so in that regard we are fortunate. Taking time out for us means quiet, rest and fun. We enjoy being together, exploring new places and sharing our creative pursuits.
Fiji is just the place we happen to be at the moment. When we get home, we are going to make sure we create some of that space in our evryday.
How will we do that?
1. I’m going to shut the door on my library and put up a Do Not Disturb sign at least two days a week so I can write.
2. We’ll make appointments with ourselves so that other ‘busy work’ that may intrude will be put into it’s proper place.
3. Our home will be our retreat. We will make it peaceful-not just for ourselves but for those who visit.
4. We will continue to take trips where we set aside time for work and for rest. (Even if it is just for one day.)
Here’s some great advice:
Jesus said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’
This is simple, but profound. Get some quiet and rest, however and whenever, you can.
