The Oxford Files #4

Oxford

The pressure is really heating up today as we are really getting into the nitty gritty of writing. Both of the subjects I’ve chosen have given us homework assignments. When we get to class we have to read them out to everyone.

Ouch! As David Finkling said the other day, ‘Writing a book is like singing in public.’ Reading in public is just as nerve wracking.

We have another week in which to prepare our longer assignments- 3000 words each. We are realising that we will have to work really hard in the next week if we are to produce something worth grading.

On the social front, it’s all going swimmingly. Tonight some of us went on a walk around the University Parks and then to the Turf Tavern to sample some of the local alcoholic offerings.

Tomorrow we have a walk around Oxford’s historic sites after our morning class discussing eBooks.

My friend Nerida, who is studying her Masters here in Oxford, and I are going out for a special dinner tomorrow night at the Randolph Hotel. It is instantly recognisable as the watering hole of Colin Dexter’s world-famous detective, Inspector Morse. We’ll have a champagne cocktail in memory of the Inspector!

On Saturday most of the people in our course are heading to Bath and to the Jane Austen Museum, amongst other attractions.

On Sunday I’ll be heading out on a literary walk. So, all in all I’m very busy between writing and excursions.

Summer School is fun.
