The Oxford Files #5

Oxford

Last weekend I had a couple of excursions. Bath was wonderful, but I would have loved to have more time there.

The Jane Austen Centre was interesting and gave an insight into her life and work in that city.

We had a cream tea (scones, clotted cream, jam and tea) at a quaint cafe.

Abby and I went to the Roman Baths and got an insight into the impact the Romans had on society. The technology they developed was amazing. The fact that we can still see their work 2000 years later is even more amazing.

On Sunday, I went on a literary walk around Oxford and got some insight into the wonderful writing heritage of this place.

You sort of hope that you can soak up the inspiration by osmosis. Alas, it still comes down to hard work. Being here and surrounded by so much history is inspiring.  CS Lewis and Tolkien are two of hundreds of great writers to have been here in Oxford.

Sunday night I went to Evensong at University Church. It was a beautiful choral service that gave a sense of awe and holiness that being in an ancient church creates. The history of the souls permeates and the spirit of God feels near.

After a relaxing weekend, it was back to work. We’ve had some interesting speakers this week. The topics have ranged from poetry, travel writing, memoir to fiction writing.

The main concern though has been the completion of writing assignments. One is due Monday and one Tuesday. It’s been a great opportunity to spend so much time on writing in such a wondeful place with amazing people who are as passionate as you are.

Going to the pub has been an important feature of student life here. Going for a walk in the park after dinner then retiring to a pub for a Pimms helps the creative process along.

Sitting in a cafe late at night with fellow writers is also good for the soul and for writing. I’ll miss the fun of these get togethers at home.

It’s different when you have to make an appointment and drive at least half an hour to meet friends. Walking around the corner and meeting by happenstance is much more fun.

Tomorrow we have an excursion to Blennheim Palace, the birthplace of Churchill and Woodstock a village in the Cotswalds.

Being in an English summer is lovely. The gardens are beautiful. I’m looking forward to being out in the countryside tomorrow.

One more week to go then I’ll be heading to London before heading home. I’ll make the most of it, I promise!
