No Risk, No Story

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.

Helen Keller

There have been lots of occasions where I’ve said yes to doing something and then been completely freaked out about it afterwards. Those times I’ve done those things have never been regrets.

I went and studied at Oxford Summer School, went on a retreat to Tuscany, took up triathlon, went to Cambodia and ended up working there for ten years and so many other things. The risks were not stupid, they were taken with a certain amount of thought, however, i find that by saying yes and committing to something where you have no guarantee of an outcome is a great way to build adventure into your life.

It may be agreeing to meet up for coffee with someone you don’t know that well,  taking a trip to a new and unusual destination, or starting work on the novel you began back when you were at uni. Whatever it is, without taking that risk and stepping out, you have no story.

The stories I’m making during this trip to the Cocos Keeling Islands are being woven into the narrative of my life. Swimming with sharks, bonfires on the beach with new friends, snorkelling with turtles and manta rays and swimming on a reef at place called The Rip are all experiences that will inform my writing and my life.

So why not take a few risks and build some great stories into your life. Start today by doing something unique or different to your normal routine. It just might lead to adventure!

If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine; it is lethal.
