100 Day CreativeChallenge: Day 37 Be A Weirdo
Masaru Ibuka, who founded Sony once said, “Creativity comes from looking for the unexpected and stepping outside your own experience.” Being weird is just being open to different experiences and ideas.
We can all develop an openness to new experiences and step out of our comfort zone.
What new experiences are you trying in 2016?
Are you eating a new type of food?
Trying a new exercise class?
Reading outside of your usual genre?
Creative people tend to be idea or experience collectors. We tend to find connections between things that may seem weird and when we try and explain them to others it can get get a little … weird!
We are all weird in our own way. Our family backgrounds, schooling, DNA, choices all make us unique. That’s why we each have a unique voice. We each have something unique to express in whatever way we do that — through song, drawing, painting, sewing, designing and so on. We all have that weird perspective that some people might engage with, but others may dismiss as being … weird.
Creative people tend to move outside socio-cultural expectations, but our lives are material we can draw from to create. We tend to feel a little ‘different’.
I don’t know about you, but I often feel different. That’s why I tend to seek other weird people. The ‘misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in square holes. The ones who see things differently.’ Jack Kerouac
Embrace your weird. Proudly wear your weirdo t-shirt. Why would you want to be normal? Be crazy enough, weird enough to think you can change the world.
