Appointments For Adventure 14: Comfort Zone

Getting out of our comfort zones takes many forms. Once I went on a tandem parachute jump because my husband thought it would be a good ‘together time’ activity. That was way out of my comfort zone!

On another occasion, I asked a stylist friend to take me shopping to take me out of my comfort zone in the clothes I wore. My style hadn’t changed for several years, and I felt that I needed to dress in a way that reflected the person I am today, not the one I was five years ago.

Tonight I’m going to the Ellington Jazz Club to hear Kankawa Nagarra (Olive Knight) the Walmatjarri Gospel Blues Singer launch her new album Heroes & Laments recorded with Desert Feet Records and includes an all star cast featuring Lucky Oceans, Dave Mann and Steve Pigram.

The first time I met Olive was in New York. She was there performing with Hugh Jackman in his Back on Broadway show. Olive sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow in her indigenous language, then in English and she brought the house down. Olive’s son, Clifton played the didgeridoo in the show too.

I don’t listen to a lot of indigenous music, but Olive is a well respected elder in her community, a spokesperson for many issues and a beautiful person. So I’m meeting some friends and going out for an evening of Gospel Blues.

Those times we step out of our comfort zones  are often the times unexpected or rich experiences occur that inspire us to step into something fresh.

I’ll let you know how it goes!

Adventure should be 80 percent ‘I think this is manageable,’ but it’s good to have that last 20 percent where you’re right outside your comfort zone. Still safe, but outside your comfort zone. Bear Grylls
