#35 Days of Dares #12 Dare to Start Over
So what do we do?
Anything.
Something.
So long as we just don’t sit there.
If we screw it up, start over.
Try something else.
If we wait until we’ve satisfied all the uncertainties,
it may be too late.
Lee Iacocca
As I finished writing my last book, I opened a new book and began scratching out the beginning of the next one.
That last page turned is a perfect excuse to write a whole new book.
Toni Sorenson
Isn’t life like that?
Sometimes we sit back and rest on our last accomplishment, the last good deed we did, the last time we gave our best.
The brave thing to do is to begin again, Whether it’s a new book, a new friendship, a new project, a new job.
New is hard, but it’s also a fresh start. Starting over? Do it!
Picking ourselves up takes courage. When we’ve been hurt, when we’ve been disappointed, or when we’ve failed, it’s hard to start over.
I finished writing my first novel in 2010. After a critique by an editor, I was told to start over. I did. I thought I’d finished eight months later. I took it to an agent and they told me it wasn’t ready.
I started over.
Finally, two years later the book was published.
Starting my second novel, I was full of trepidation. Could I put myself through this process again? I picked up my pen and began to write.
I’m just beginning my fourth novel and have two more books I’m working on. I keep working at the craft. I didn’t give up. Each day I write it’s like starting over. I’m back to the drawing board. The page is empty so I write.
This week, I’m expecting my third book back from editing. I have to go back and rewrite. It’s not fully starting again, but it feels like it. It’s hard work.
If I want to be an author, I have to start over every day.
Writing a new page every day is a metaphor for life. Each day we begin a new page. We start over. It’s a fresh start.
“It’s humbling to start fresh. It takes a lot of courage. But it can be reinvigorating. You just have to put your ego on a shelf & tell it to be quiet.”
Jennifer Ritchie Payette, co-author, “Modular Career Design”
