The Perfection Trap

You are a work in progress, which means you get there a little at a time, not all at once.

Some of us are too bound up by wanting success or perfection that we are paralysed by fear of not being good enough or not being as good as we perceive someone else to be.

If we take risks, we’re going to make mistakes, but in between the trying and the achievement is where the story often lies. A good story has conflict, struggle and perhaps even redemption, so if everything was easy, there wouldn’t be any story would there?

People often say to my husband and I that we are living the dream. We spend our lives creating, writing and travelling in between having a wonderful home life. We are truly blessed.

However, at times, in the midst of all this we have our doubts, compare ourselves to others and fail. Sometimes we ask ourselves what on earth we are striving for and why?

Then we get an email encouraging us, have an incredible experience or see our work out in the world and we take a breath. A breath that inhales the hope, inspiration and courage we need to continue and breathe out the doubt, internal criticism and fear.

The Great Creator (as Julia Cameron calls the God of creativity) flows into us and into our work. If we follow the prompting and allow creativity to work through us, it’s not perfection that matters, we are human after all, it’s being obedient to the call and in trying that we find our sweet spot in life —that moment when we are doing what we are created for.

You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it. Benjamin Mee
