The One Hundred Creative Challenge: Day 8
Each one of us has a unique story to share with the world. A story that is told through our creativity. Whether it’s writing, painting, decorating, styling, fashion, singing, playing an instrument, teaching — anything that springs from our unique perspective.
We are designed to be creative.
“We all love stories. We’re born for them,” says filmmaker Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “Toy Story,” “WALL-E”) in this short film that celebrates everyone who’s ever had an idea, picked up a camera, or searched for a way to bring their story to life. This film aired during the 86th Academy Awards, largely using people’s original YouTube videos.
We’re telling a story when we:
- post our photos or videos on Facebook, Instagram
- create a Pinterest board.
- explain how the stars came to be in the sky to a child
- have a conversation around the table at dinner time
- draw a picture
- decorate our homes
- choose our clothes and create our own style
- tell stories about what our children get up to
- give a speech, teach a class
- make a present for a special someone
- cook a meal for our family or friends
These stories may not be written in a book and may only be read by one person, however, they represent our creativity, our lives. So many people question or dismiss or deny their creativity.
‘I’m not creative like you.’
‘I can’t dance or sing.’
‘I can’t draw.’
By putting creativity into a limited definition, we diminish the creative forces within us. We are inherently creative and every time we problem solve, make anything, think of new ideas or express an opinion we are showing our creativity. We are telling our story.
