At spin class our teacher often plays the Ke$ha song Crazy Kids. You might call me weird, but as we spin and sweat, I often say to myself, ‘You are crazy. You spin, train with weights, go to yoga class and run.’ Yet, I keep going, along with a crazy crew of people who turn up at our gym every week.
I’ve also been thinking about this crazy life my husband and I live and, during the class last night, began plotting out this blog. This is how a writer’s mind thinks. I also used to be a teacher so I’m also looking for the Life Apps that come out of my everyday experience that I can write about or share with people I mentor.
So, when I got home from my spin class, I jotted down some thoughts in my #365adventure journal, searched out the lyrics to Crazy Kids and looked up some quotes about being weird and crazy.
Adventurous and creative types are those who will say yes to crazy things. For instance, I told my friends that if they needed someone to be in their Oxfam Walk team in October, I’d do it. I got a message the other day telling me I’m in. So now I have to train to walk 100km in 48 hours.
I looked up the training programme and three weeks out from the event I’m supposed to do a 50km training walk. What the? Am I crazy?
After jotting down a few things in my journal, my husband looked across the room at me and said, ‘So, if you could go anywhere in the world where would it be. Don’t think, just say it!’
‘Amalfi Coast in Italy,’ I said, immediately dreaming of sitting on a cliffside overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, whilst sipping a chianti and listening to people greet each other with a friendly, ‘Buon giorno.’ You get the drift.
So he starts searching for flights, car deals and asks when should we go. I love my husband!
This time last year, a friend told me she was going to East Timor in a couple of weeks time to visit an organisation that rescues girls from abusive situations and asked if I wanted to go. I thought about it for a day and decided to go. I wrote about this experience in a blog called There’s No Forgiveness Without Love. The trip was one of the most impacting experiences of my life.
Each year, my husband and I donate some of our time and skills to work with non-profit organisations. These experiences are often the best ones. Somehow, giving your time and skills to help people is more satisfying than indulging in a five-star holiday. Are we crazy?
People often tell me I’m crazy, but you know what? I love it. I want to be crazy. I want to have adventures. I want to see if I can help change the world. I don’t mind if you think that’s weird.
#365adventure is a book lover’s year of adventures. Adventures in travel, friendship, family, soul, heart and, of course, book stores!
